Gulf of Mexico's Waters have tested many ships before this oil spill!

The recent Gulf oil spill has perhaps shed new light on the centuries-old mystery surrounding the shipwreck of the Spanish Galleon "Atocha" which sailed and sank in a raging hurricane in the year 1622.

The search for the Nuestra Senora De Atocha confounded and frustrated the best efforts of  seekers of adventure and  fortune  for  centuries. Modern-day treasure hunter Mel Fisher spent 16 years of his life in a determined quest to solve the mystery of the Atocha- sometimes referred to as the Ghost Galleon because trails of artifacts and debris seemed to lead to dead ends.  How could a ship just disappear?

What does an oil spill have to do with a lost treasure ship?

The catastrophic environmental and economic consequences of this unprecedented oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has scientists and researchers scrambling to predict the path of devastation.  A  list of scenarios have been posited, including the  possibility the so called "loop current" will bring the spill all the way to the East Coast.  On the other hand, another current phenomenon called "cyclonic eddy" may deposit the oil elsewhere. These capricious if not whimsical currents and weather patterns  are believed to have been in play in the Atocha's final resting place.

An Historic Day Americans Remember…

We have a coin that I wish everyone in America would own, however, there are only a handful of these coins available. It is of the greatest artifacts of commemoration in U.S. History.

Do you remember what you were doing the day that we were attacked? I’m talking about Sept. 11, 2001. Most of us hold a vivid picture in our mind of exactly what we were doing that day, right down to the smallest detail. But did you know that there was a (don’t ever forget) treasure certified to have been in those buildings on that fateful day.

Yes, it’s true. Investors stored a very small amount of coins in a vault in the World Trade Center. That vault, and those coins ended up approximately two floors below ground level after the building came crashing down.

About a week and a half later, the vault was found! When the vault was opened, the workers carefully picked up the coins and turned them over to Brinks armored trucks for security staff to move to an appropriate, safe location. You know of the famous Brinks trucks… Right? Those coins were taken directly to the number one certification company in the world, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS)! If the valuable coins weren’t taken by security, they would have never been able to be certified that they had been in the World Trade Center on that infamous day in history.

But because they were, PCGS was able to certify, encapsulate and seal each of the few coins and certify that in fact these are truly the only artifacts certified to have been in the WTC on Sept. 11th 2001.
The certification inside the sealed holder describes the coin and is marked, Ground Zero Recovery, 9-11-01.

Since that time the standing theme has been “ Lest We Never Forget.” I believe these coins will go down in history as one of the most highly collectible coins ever certified for United States Commemoratives.

Lady Liberty Showed to much skin

The Standing Liberty Quarter is a very famous and desired coin by collectors. This beautiful coin was minted for the very first time in 1916 and through the roaring 20’s till 1930. The U.S. Mint always seems to be destined for drama or to some degree create a scandal of the new coins they release.

Well, this holds true for the Standing Liberty Quarter too. It turns out that the designer Herman A. MacNeil did a beautiful rendition of Liberty holding a shield for protection in her left hand, and a exceptional job ever famous sign of peace, the olive branch in her right hand. However, Mr. MacNeil somehow left the breast of Lady Liberty exposed. Of course, this created a tremendous uproar among the public and they demanded a more acceptable clothed Ms. Liberty.

Finally in 1917, the U.S. Mint made the adaption and covered her breast with her gown all the way up to her neckline. Oh, and by the way the U.S. mint rearranged the stars on the reverse side of the coin. Then, in 1925 they completed the last alteration on the beautiful collector’s coin when the U.S. Mint realized the date on the bottom of the obverse side of the coin was rubbing away, thus leaving little visibility of the date or if any at all. So, in 1925, they recessed the date into the coin for a lasting impression.

Catch the Famous "V" where the US was mistaken...

Here's an intriguing story where the US Mint actually refuses to take fault for it's easily mistaken identity.

The liberty head or otherwise known as the very famous V Nickel was designed by the Mint Director Charles Barber way back in 1883. The coin was put to heavy use through 1913 and was replaced by the the famous, Buffalo Nickel. One of my favorite coin stories comes from that first year issue V Nickel, in 1883. The U.S. Mint actually refuses to admit to it, but they forgot to put the word cents under the V on the reverse side of the coin. It turns out that this nickel was the same size as the five dollar liberty gold minted during that same time. It also had a very similar design on both the obverse side and reverse of the coin.

Because of this mistake, crooks plated the V Nickel with gold, and then, they would pass them off as five dollar gold coins. Finally, the mint got wise and started striking the coins with the word cents on the reverse side. This simple and necessary change saved alot of money and time lost from those honest merchants.
